What Is Mangal Dosha?
Mangal dosha is a placement that people also refer to as Mangal dosha, Manglik dosha or
kuja dosha. In Vedic astrology, Mangal literally means Mars, and Dosha means a flaw or a
negative influence placed in the kundli. So when people talk about a Mangal Dosh, or Manglik
dosha, they mean a certain position of Mars in the birth chart that is traditionally said to
affect your marriage or married life.
Mars is considered an action-oriented and powerful planet; it represents courage, strength,
ambition, and sometimes anger. Its position in certain houses of the kundli is believed to
disturb the happiness of married life, hence it is carefully read prior to marriage in
Indian astrology. A person who has this planetary position in their birth chart is called a
Manglik, also known as Kuja Dosha (Kuja being another name for Mars) and Bhauma Dosha in
some regions.
What Does Being Manglik Mean?
Being Manglik means that Mars is sitting in one of the houses that astrologers traditionally
associate with Mangal Dosha in the kundli (birth chart). It does not mean that something is
wrong with the person's character or nature. It only describes one planetary position among
many in the kundli, and it is read alongside everything else in the chart.
Is Mangal Dosh Good or Bad?
Mangal Dosh is not simply good or bad. Mars is a positive planet that gives strength and the
ability to make decisions, which are useful qualities in life. The dosha is considered to be
a problem in the context of marriage, where there is too much energy; if this does not get
balanced, it is said to create problems between the partners. Many of these effects are also
said to reduce or cancel out completely, depending on the rest of the chart.
Is Mangal Dosh Only Related to Marriage?
While Mangal Dosha is traditionally discussed in the context of marriage, as that is where
astrologers say its effects are most prominent, Mars influences other parts of a person's
life too, such as career, courage and health, and so its position is read independently for
these areas as well. That being said, the majority of people who search for Mangal Dosh, or
Manglik dosha, are looking for information about marriage compatibility, hence why it is the
focus of this page.
How Our Mangal Dosha Calculator Works
Enter your name (optional), gender, date of birth, time of birth and place of birth above.
The calculator uses your birth details to build your kundli and checks whether Mars is
placed in one of the houses traditionally associated with Mangal Dosha. You will see a clear
Manglik / Not Manglik result, which you can also download as a PDF.
Due to the influence of time on the reading, even a few minutes of difference can change the
outcome, so it is best to use the time written on your birth certificate if available. If
you are unsure of your exact time of birth, treat the result as indicative rather than
definitive.
What Are the Effects of Mangal Dosh?
Traditional astrology links Mangal Dosh to the following effects, primarily in married life:
- Disagreements and friction between partners
- Noticeable differences in temperament or approach to life
- Delays or hurdles before marriage occurs
- Impatience and frequent arguments at home
- Tension around day-to-day decisions and routines
- Emotional pressure on the relationship
These effects are stated as tendencies rather than certainties. Many Manglik charts also
hold mitigation factors that reduce or completely negate the effects of the dosha, hence why
the same dosha affects people in vastly different ways.
Does Mangal Dosh Affect Marriage?
This is the main concern of most people who look up a Mangal Dosh calculator for marriage,
hence the separate section.
- Delay in marriage: linked to a strong, uncancelled Mangal Dosh, but does not apply to all Manglik people; the rest of the chart has an equal say.
- Divorce or separation: some texts note this as a possible result of a strong Mangal Dosh, specifically in the 7th or 8th house, but it is highly dependent on other factors.
- Manglik and non-Manglik marriage: this is a possibility and does happen, but astrologers suggest examining both charts for cancellation factors and remedies instead of declining such a match out of hand.
- Married life: a strong, uncancelled Mangal Dosh is said to bring friction and impatience, but the compatibility of the couple and their efforts are just as important.
Mangal Dosh Cancellation
Mangal dosha cancellation is one of the most searched topics related to this dosha, and for
good reason. Most kundlis that show Mangal Dosh also show some form of cancellation, hence
why it is important to look at the complete reading rather than a yes or no.
- What it means: certain planetary combinations are believed to reduce or completely cancel the effects of Mangal Dosh, depending on the position, strength and houses of Mars.
- Planetary conditions: Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio), Mars exalted in Capricorn, or a benefic like Jupiter or Venus aspecting or sitting with Mars.
- Matching two Manglik charts: when both partners have the dosha, the effects are traditionally said to balance each other out.
- Why it needs the full kundli: cancellation should never be considered in isolation; the strength of Mars and the planets around it are just as important.
Mangal Dosh and Kundli Matching
Checking Mangal Dosh is an important part of kundli matching, but only one part. Astrologers
analyse both partners' charts, and a Manglik person is often considered to match well with
another Manglik person, as the shared placement is believed to balance out Mars's effects
for both.
Guna Milan, the traditional point-based system, also considers Nadi (health and progeny) and
Bhakoot (emotional and financial wellbeing), alongside Mars in the 7th house and the
position of Venus and Jupiter in both charts. A high Guna Milan score is not considered
sufficient if Nadi, Bhakoot or Mangal Dosh raise any concerns, hence a complete reading
always looks at the full kundli of both partners. You can check your own compatibility using
our Kundli Matching Calculator.
Mangal Dosh Remedies
If your kundli shows a strong Mangal Dosh, traditional astrology offers several widely
practiced remedies that are followed all over India. They are meant to alleviate the effects
of Mars, rather than guarantee that the dosha will disappear completely.
- Mangal Dosh Puja (Mangal Dosh Nivaran Puja): performed exclusively for Mars, generally before marriage, by a qualified priest or astrologer.
- Hanuman worship: regular prayers to Lord Hanuman, associated with strength and protection, to counteract the effects of Mars.
- Tuesday practices: attending a temple, fasting or praying specifically on Tuesdays, the day ruled by Mars.
- Charity and donations: donating red lentils, jaggery or red cloth, preferably on Tuesdays.
- Mantra and spiritual practices: chanting the Mangal mantra and other mantras related to Mars, and meditating for calmness.
For a strong, uncancelled Mangal Dosha, astrologers often recommend an elaborate puja before
marriage, conducted with the guidance of an experienced astrologer. No remedy should be
taken as a guarantee; they are followed as a traditional, supportive measure, in addition
to understanding and effort in every marriage.
Where Is Mangal Dosh Puja Performed?
You can perform the Mangal Dosh Puja either at home with a pandit or at a Hanuman or
Navagraha temple close to you. One temple is traditionally connected to Mars in particular.
Mangalnath Mandir, Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh)
This temple is located on the banks of the Shipra (Kshipra) river in Ujjain. This place is
revered by Hindus as the birthplace of Mangal (Mars) and is therefore the most popular
destination for Mangal Dosh Nivaran Puja. The presiding deity at this temple is Lord Shiva.
This place is famous for the Bhat Puja for the removal of Mangal Dosh, which involves
offering cooked rice as a remedy. Tuesdays, and Bhaum Pradosh falling on that day of the
week, are considered highly auspicious. Many people also visit the Jyotirlinga temple of
Mahakaleshwar, located around 5 km away, on the same trip.

Mangal Dosh: The Bigger Picture
Mangal Dosha is one of the various doshas in Vedic astrology; for example,
Kaal Sarp Dosh affects the general life
progression rather than your marriage prospects, and Pitra Dosh deals with ancestral Karmas.
Mangal dosha is something not to be worried about, as it is just one position in your kundli
and the majority of people who have it also have some sort of cancellation. A calm and
complete reading of your chart will always be more enlightening than simply looking at this
dosha.
The position of Mars at birth cannot be changed, hence Mangal Dosha itself cannot be
negated. Rather, its effects can be counteracted using existing cancellation, remedies or a
complete reading of your entire kundli. Many Manglik individuals go on to have a happy and
prosperous married life. Use the calculator above to check your Manglik status, and for a
complete reading prior to marriage, get your Kundli matched and consult an experienced
astrologer. If you wish to further your knowledge of Manglik astrology and the doshas
mentioned here, All India Institute of Occult Science's
Astrology Course goes into great detail
about these concepts.
